Nestled away in the western fringes of Zonicia, the kingdom of Warzena has persevered for millennia. However, recent events have shaken the kingdom to its core. The Storm King's invasion has devastated the nation, robbing it of its riches and its king, leaving his brother to pick up the pieces. Meanwhile, anti-monarchist elements are making their move to overthrow the ancient regime and deliver the country into the light of the present, while threats mount on the nation's borders. Will the king manage to hold on to his crown, or will his enemies finally wrestle control of the nation from the clutches of the past?

Lore

Warzena was born on the fertile banks of the Menuch river when a ragged band of zebras, weary from their long trek, came to the spot promised to them by the divine diarchy of Zal and Zanit. They founded a city there and named it Zamivgazal, literally meaning "confluence of the gods", and the rest was history. At least, that's what the priests say. Most likely, Warzena was founded by a group of Zonicians that moved into the region nearly 2200 years ago, and spread out across the Menuch river valley. As the kingdom grew, it remained mostly politically insular. Its markets, however, were wide open, and the kingdom thrived as trade between the Zonician coast and the Neighle flowed through it, creating great prosperity. It was during this period of good fortune that the First Temple, a great structure dedicated to the worship of the gods, was constructed. After Flag of Maregypt Maregypt collapsed in the early 1st century ALB, Warzena occupied the Maregyptian settlements in Flag of Republic of Tobuck Tobuck, offering them protection in exchange for loyalty. Over the following centuries, Warzena remained in its splendid isolation, even as empires rose and fell around it.

However, isolation could not save Warzena from the armies of the Flag of Quaggatai Quaggatai, which conquered the kingdom along with the rest of Zonicia, and destroyed the ancient First Temple. Eventually, the Quaggatai were overthrown, and Warzena's independence was restored in the Treaty of Colthoba in 836. But Warzena soon found itself in a new world. The trade route that was the lifeblood of the nation had disappeared following the invention of new, sturdier vessels that could traverse longer distances through deeper water. Coupled with the costs of building the grandiose and opulent Second Temple, the economy began to decline. This caused unrest, particularly in the southern provinces, as its pony inhabitants had grown more and more irritated with their zebra masters. Although Queen Mithonzanit III attempted to alleviate the situation with reform programs and new taxes, it was all in vain. Eventually, the Imazeeb, infuriated by Warzenan taxes on their imports, invaded Tobuck, where they were received with open hooves. The situation only continued to deteriorate as a succession of incompetent rulers caused anti-monarchist sentiment to grow.

At the turn of the millennium, however, there was a brief glimpse of hope. The new king, Zamaliahon XVI, was a young and zealous reformer, who launched numerous programs in an attempt to revitalize the nation. But this was not to last. In 1005, the Storm King invaded, and the nation's meager defenses crumbled like dust before his vast armada. The Second Temple was looted and the rest was burned to ash, while Zamaliahon himself was killed during a raid on the Royal Palace. His brother, Barekzamal, managed to escape in time, and was made king in absentia. However, he held no real power while the Storm King's forces occupied the kingdom. Fortunately, the conqueror was slain only a few months later and Warzena was free once again.

But this freedom had come at a monumental cost.

Barekzamal VII, as he was now known, was never intended for the throne, and his inexperience became evident very quickly. He had inherited a broken kingdom, with an economy in tatters, and public morale at an all time low. Zamivgazal lay in ruins, with yet another Temple having been reduced to ash and dust. Although he attempted to initiate reforms with the help of his late brother's advisors, his overreliance on them made him look even more green as the situation continued to spiral out of his control. It was only with the timely arrival of Flag of Hippogriffia Hippogriffian aid that the country was able to begin taking steps towards recovery.

Today the king presides over an uneasy peace. Although the hippogriffs have continued to provide assistance, their increased presence has served to incense discontent among more isolationist elements. Unrest is at fever pitch as CAMO, a broad alliance of various anti-monarchist groups, is making its move to overthrow Barekzamal and implement their vision for the country. All the while, threats are mounting on Warzena's borders. The southern coast is now ruled by the Republic of Tobuck, a front for arms smugglers looking to make a quick bit, while the brooding Flag of Chiropterra Chiropterrans to the west have grown more restless and aggressive. Warzena's future now rests on a knife's edge, and it remains to be seen if the king can rescue his nation, or let a 2000 year legacy perish in the flames of war.

When the Storm King invaded us with his army, we initially resisted and fought back, before realising the mad conqueror's strategy was without flaw. Instead of continuing to fight in vain, we sought to negotiate with him and eventually managed to sign a deal that spared us from doom. Angered by our initial resistance, the Storm King sacked our largest cities and burned down many buildings. He then demanded we pay hefty tribute and seized all our artifacts. Our people are angered by our failure to protect them and our economy is ailing.

For the past century, Warzena has been plagued by ineffective leadership and unstable governments, resulting in general stagnation and unrest. Many activists began to clamour for change, but their calls fell on deaf ears, and they were ultimately repressed. This soon culminated in the formation of the Coalition of Anti-Monarchy Organizations (CAMO), an underground resistance movement that seeks to overthrow the monarchy and completely reshape Warzena. The fallout of the Storm King's invasion has served to further stir up the already volatile political climate, as discontent with the ruling system has grown to levels heretofore unheard of and more people are becoming disillusioned with the current state of affairs, swelling CAMO's ranks, and bolstering the organization's support network.

After the Storm King was defeated, Warzena was left in a dire situation, with an economy in tatters, and its capital sacked and destroyed. The hippogriffs, who had occupied Zumidia, offered to help the struggling nation. The king accepted their proposition, and for the past two years, Warzena has received advice and material aid from Hippogriffia. Although this has prevented the nation from completely collapsing, the situation still remains tenuous at best, not to mention those who are displeased with the presence of the hippogriffs and the nation's dependence on them.

When Warzena broke free of Quaggatai rule, it found itself in a precarious position. The ancient trade route from Maregypt, that had once passed through Warzena to reach the great cities of Zonicia, had been rendered obsolete by the invention of new ships that could travel vast distances by sea. This left Warzena stripped of its economic lifeblood, and the economy soon began to falter. The construction of the Second Temple in the 850s pushed the already unsteady economy to its limits, kickstarting 150 years of economic downturn and stagnation. The situation continued to worsen as succeeding rulers were unable to handle the issue, further exacerbated by the loss of Tobuck in 956. Although the start of the 11th century seemed to promise a reversal of the kingdom's fortunes, the Storm King's invasion shattered those hopes, and has left the economy in complete freefall. The new king is nearly at his wit's end and underground resistance has grown to monumental levels, as people from across Warzena seek some sort of solution.

Born: 24th of August, 984 in Zamivgazal

Biography: The second son of Zamaliahon XV, Barekzamal had an idyllic childhood, free of struggle. While his brother, Zamaliahon, was subject to endless tutoring as the crown prince, Barekzamal spent his days playing with the foals of the nobility, and galloping gleefully through the streets of Zamivgazal. When he did have tutoring, he was a diligent student, but he wasn't as studious as his brother. He much preferred to spend time with his favourite playmate, Ummazanit Nazlayn, the daughter of a prominent noble. Although she was intended as a future bride for his brother, they were never officially engaged, and she much preferred Barekzamal's company to that of his eccentric brother, who himself seemed to have no interest in anything asides from his studies.

When their father died in 1001, Zamaliahon was made king, and swiftly leapt into action. Among the first things he did was to formally renounce any intention of marrying in the near future, leaving Barekzamal and Ummazanit free to get married that same year. The following year, the two sired their first foal, a colt named Hannizamal, today the heir presumptive. However, since Barekzamal was technically his brother's successor, he did make an effort to educate himself on the basics of statecraft and governance. But there was no rush. After all, they were young, and had their whole lives ahead of them. His brother would inevitably find a nice mare and Barekzamal could live the rest of his life in bliss. Unfortunately, the gods had other plans for the young prince, and in 1005, his precious world was turned upside down.

As the Storm King swept through the kingdom, Barekzamal and his family managed to escape, but his brother didn't, and was slain in the Palace by the invaders. When Barekzamal found out, he wept for hours, and from that day forth, his smile permanently left his face. After the conqueror was slain and Warzena freed, Barekzamal returned to Zamivgazal a changed person. Forgoing his coronation, he quickly set to work, trying to keep the nation afloat and recuperate from the devastation. Although he had some success, for the most part, his policies were ineffective as his inexperience betrayed him. Now, he sits uneasy on the throne as the threat of revolt grows. While not as unpopular as his father was, he definitely has his fair share of opposition. The fate of the nation rests on his haunches, and it will take monumental effort on his part to keep it, and his throne, from falling out of his grasp. But Barekzamal is determined to bring Warzena into a brighter future, where he can smile with his family once more.
