The Crystal Empire is a new nation in the world stage. Long ago, it had disappeared following the defeat of the evil tyrant, King Sombra, who had cast a curse on it. The Empire reappeared only recently, as did Sombra, but it was ultimately freed with aid from Equestria. Now under the rule of the Equestrian princess, Mi Amore Cadenza, many wonder how the Crystal Empire will proceed in these troubled times. Will the Crystal Ponies stay loyal to Equestria, or will darkness return once more?

Lore

Before the Darkness

Crystal ponies refract and shimmer under the magical influence of their realm

Their origins unknown, the prosperous Crystal Ponies lived in the lands of the Crystal Empire for centuries. Primarily Earth Ponies, these unique ponies sparkle and refract the magical lights of the crystals that abound in their lands.

Everything changed when the shadowy Umbrum attacked. They burned their crystal homes, preyed on them and crushed their hopes. However, Amore, a pony of love and optimism, discovered the Crystal Heart, a crystal gem of immense magical power. She projected her positive energy into it and with the power of the heart, the Umbrum were banished deep beneath the Empire. Amore was crowned as the first Princess of the Crystal Empire and became a wise and benevolent ruler. The power of the Crystal Heart kept the ponies safe and even warmed the local climate, making it more temperate and hospitable.

When a dragon stole the Crystal Heart, Celestia and Luna recovered it, thus establishing friendly relations between Flag of Equestria Equestria and the Crystal Empire. The first Crystal Fair was held to celebrate the event and became an annual festivity afterwards.

The King of All Monsters

An Umbrum, or "Shadow Pony"

The Umbrum plotted their escape and came up with a devious plan. They put a shadow pony inside the shell of a young earth pony, which allowed him to resist the Crystal Heart’s love, and sent him to the surface. The weak colt was found by patrolling guards, lying unconscious in the snow, with no knowledge of how he got there. The only thing he said was ”Sombra”, so that became his name.

He was sent to an orphanage. While there, Sombra met an eccentric and optimistic unicorn named Radiant Hope. They grew up together and became close friends, while other ponies avoided and mocked them. When Hope and Sombra visited the famed Crystal Heart, they saw visions in its reflections. Hope saw she would become a princess; Sombra saw he would become a monster. He hid this revelation from her and feared it would become true.

The two looked forward to the Crystal Fair, but when it arrived, Sombra became bed-ridden and ill. This pattern repeated year after year, but always Radiant would remain by his side. One year Sombra's pony shell was nearly destroyed, his shadowy insides leaking out of it, but Hope cast a healing spell in desperation and saved his life. She gained her cutie mark and was soon invited to the Canterlot School for Gifted Unicorns.

Sombra feared the visions were becoming a reality; Hope would become a Princess and he would become a monster. He fled in terror to the frozen wastes, where he soon found a red Umbrum crystal. The crystal spoke to him and revealed his origin and purpose: It was his duty to save his people from imprisonment.

Sombra became a tyrant, enslaving the Crystal Empire

Sombra embraced his true self and his destiny. He returned to Crystal City, went to the Crystal Heart and attempted to steal it so his people would be free, but Princess Amore intervened. She tried to reason with him, but revealed that she had known of Sombra's vision and his pains whenever a Fair was held yet had done nothing, which enraged Sombra. He turned her into stone and shattered her into a thousand pieces, never to be rebuilt. Hope, witnessing this, fled to Equestria.

Sombra became King and Tyrant of the Crystal Empire. He ruled over the crystal ponies with an iron hoof and enslaved the populace who had mocked and alienated him in his youth. He planned to release his people from their prisons, but before that plan could come to fruition, Radiant Hope had warned Celestia and Luna of his rise to power. The two Princesses arrived and banished him into the Frozen North.

Celestia and Luna Banished Sombra and Drove back his Darkness (artist Huussii)

Vengeful, Sombra cursed the Crystal Empire, and it vanished with him. Hope was the only crystal pony left and she became a student of Celestia. She regretted betraying her only friend, left Equestria and travelled to the Frozen North where Sombra had gone. There, she found the same Umbrum crystal that Sombra had found, and moved to live among the Umbrum, who kept her from aging.

The Return

Over a thousand years later, in 1002 ALB, Luna and Celestia's banishment spell faded and the Crystal Empire returned, King Sombra with it. Celestia sent her faithful student, Twilight Sparkle, and the other wielders of the Elements of Harmony, to aid Princess Cadance and Prince Shining Armour in defending the Empire. Sombra, in shadowy, body-less form, attempted to assault the Crystal City. Twilight Sparkle and her dragon Spike managed to recover the Crystal Heart and used it destroy Sombra and banish him to Limbo. This deed made Spike into a hero of the Empire.

Soon after Princess Mi Amore Cadenza (Cadance), possibly related to the Princess Amore of old, became the ruler of the Crystal Empire with her husband Shining Armour. Most crystal ponies welcomed the Equestrian rulers, but not all. Some were resentful of the new Equestrian influence in the ancient nation, and wanted to be ruled by one of their own. These ponies were a minority, however, and for the most part Cadance's rule has been uncontested.

Growth and Modernity

The modern Crystal Empire is a marvel of beauty, architecture, and wide spaces (Artist - Shamanguli)

Close ties were formed with Equestria and thanks to it the Empire was rapidly brought into the modern age. Crystal City became a center of industry while the bountiful crystal mines in the Frozen North were reopened. Work remains to be done, as the snowy plains of the Empire remain poorly populated and underdeveloped.

Cadance and Shining Armour had a daughter, Flurry Heart, who was the first alicorn to be born in over a millennium. With the Crystal Heart safe and secure and with the economy booming, the future looks bright for the Empire.

However, in the shadows, a cult has formed, led by a mysterious unicorn mare. The cult plans to bring back the King, who could restore the Empire's independence and its former, dark, glory. Whether they succeed is uncertain, but if they do, the Empire could be plunged into a new, dark age...

National Focus

Main article: Crystal Empire shared national focus tree/scriptoutput
Crystal Empire focus tree

The Crystal Empire has a slow opening, and its focuses are weak given the size of the nation, but the Crystal Empire has the advantage of fewer maluses - Sombra Scare and Equestrian Overlord. The true disadvantage for a Crystal player is the industrial capacity provided to its overlord, Flag of Equestria Equestria.

Party time! The Crystal Empire is eager to make up for 1000 years of missed parties, with a whopping five festivity based focuses at the tree start.

  • Winter Solstice (49d) - will bypass if not completed by the end of the year. It will not fire immediately but will grant 250PP at the date of the Winter Solstice.
  • Equestria Games (35d) - must be completed before Equestria completes the Friendship Games focus, which they usually take first. By contributing to the preparations the Crystal Empire will receive 16PP benefit (possibly a bug). Generally not worth taking.
  • Crystalling Anniversary (49d) - will give a small increase in political power (0.05 daily) and 5% Stability. It can be taken at any time
  • Crystal Fair (49d) - Will request Equestrian support to host the Crystal Fair, which will cost Equestria PP. If accepted the Crystal Empire will gain 300PP. Prerequisite for Past Glory.
  • Grand Festival (70d) - will give a short term boost to PP gain and construction. Once this is approx 60% through the Sombra Club will immediately trigger, if it has not done so already. Prerequisite for Past Glory.

Crystal Strength - This path leads to a traditional industrial segment, with civilian factories, research bonuses and a research slot. Proceeding further down the path will lead to unusual bonuses, including free factory repair, racial magic bonuses and a very strong bonus to nuclear tech allowing for an early game rush for nukes. End path segments are not available under communist / Sombra's rule.

Military Expansion - A standard military path, though lacking in Doctrine research (this is found on the Status Quo path). Most focuses can't be taken until war starts or is being threatened. Remember to take the fort building focus at the time you are actually building forts. Most focuses are not available under Communism / Sombra's rule.

Mech / Medicine / Princess - These three focuses can be accessed either via the Crystal Strength or the Military Expansion tree, and provide some good tech for a high-quality army, including the ability to get good heavy tanks and field hospitals early on. These focuses are not available under Communism / Sombra's rule

Status Quo - This path will focus on maintaining the Harmonic government. The second focus, Mi Amore Family, unlocks a decision to remove the Sombra Scare malus. The central path is open to both sides, and increases industry, research and military, including 2 bonuses to land doctrine and 5 volunteer divisions of 6 brigades each. After resolving the status of the Crystal Empire under Equestria, it also gives an extra research slot and infrastructure (most of which ends up built in Equestria). The table below shows benefits of the mutually exclusive choices, Subordination and Referendum for Independence.

  • +7.5% Civilian Industry to Equestria
  • -50% Licence cost (stacks with -50% from puppet status)
  • 1 Civilian Factory for Equestria
  • Integrated Puppet status replaced with Puppet, giving back Crystal Empire their full industry
  • -0.03 daily autonomy gain
  • Choosing to be annexed by Equestria ends the game
  • Removes Equestrian Overlord malus
  • Crystal Empire gains an unique version of Free Trade trade law
  • Option between remaining as Equestrian dominion or full independence

Regardless of choice Princess Mi Amore Cadenza gains Princess of Ponies (+10% stability, +0.20 daily political power) and the popularity of the Harmonic party is increased by 15%.

New Order - this path will lead to Crystal Empire becoming Communist under a left wing coalition led by the Red Crystal Workers Party. The focus Democratic Coalition will trigger elections. If the Communist support is higher than 50%, Communists will peacefully take power, else a civil war will begin. Either way, the Royal Family and Crystal Heart ideas will be removed. After some time Stalliongrad may propose a union. If this is accepted Stalliongrad will receive the option to puppet or annex Crystal Ponies Republic.

  • Visit to Stalliongrad will give an agreement with Stalliongrad. This will provide army experience, military factory construction speed for 2 years, as well as enabling the military theorist Wild Veteran. Further research agreements with Stalliongrad will provide armor and industry bonuses.
  • The rest of the Communist tree includes nothing of particular note, with no great bonuses - general research, stability, output, and recruitable population are available. The final item, Socialist Union of Equestria, will attempt to invite the 3 communist nations (New Equality Country, Equestria, Stalliongrad) to be annexed by the Crystal Ponies Republic, although a positive answer is mostly up to chance.

Strategy

The recently returned Crystal Empire starts as an integrated puppet to Equestria. As such, the country's industrial and military capacities are very low. Unless playing a supporting role for an Equestrian player, to adequately prepare for the inevitable Changeling invasion, Crystal Strength and Status Quo - Referendum for Independence paths should be rushed to give you the necessary production for building a decent border army.

Crystal Empire starts with 9 divisions divided into 4 poorly manned Royal Guard divisions and 5 decently equipped regular infantry for a total of 52.5k ponypower deployed. They also have a small air wing consisting of 43 early fighters.

One strategy is to use the Crystal Empire's terrain to your advantage. Since most of your factories will come from completing national foci, you could focus your construction on building infrastructure and level 6 forts at the Changeling-Crystal border. The AI refrains from attacking level 4 and higher forts, thus creating a pocket from which to encircle the invading Changeling forces. The focus No Step On Our Snieg can help with this by giving some temporary fort construction speed bonuses.

Note that under an independence path, there is no obligation to defend Equestria from the changelings, however, the nations are stronger together, and Equestria falling will make a solo war against the Changelings extremely difficult. A Communist leaning Crystal Empire may want to align with Stalliongrad, either backstabbing Equestria during the Changeling war, or assisting it and then setting up for the potential war against Equestria afterwards.

Of course, the Crystal player could instead return Sombra, leading to an expansionist, aggressive path that will bring war with Equestria. For further details see Imperium Crystale.

Alternate Path - Return of the King

The Return of Sombra event chain is long.

It will typically begin after about 3 months in the Harmonic Crystal Empire - for the impatient player progressing through the Grand Festival focus will cause it to trigger instantly.

This will begin a minor choose your own adventure, as you play a normal Crystal pony recruited by Sombra Supporters to join their club. Different outcomes for your club in the post Sombra world can be reached via the adventure.

Note that Equestria can complete a focus that prevents the return of Sombra. However, it is not possible for them to finish the focus before you bring about Sombra's return.

The player may

  1. Join the Club - and personally participate in the adventure to bring Sombra back,
  2. Support the Club - agree to support the club materially, which will skip all of the story content and eventually bring about Sombra's return.
  3. Report the Club - Join the club, and report it to the police after the first meeting, which will reduce the Sombra supporters malus.
  4. Decline the Invitation - the player will have multiple opportunities to decline.
Spoilers below, we recommend these are best experienced in game before reading
Supremacy Support Method

If Supremacy reaches 50%, the Sombra supporters will successfully bring about the return of Sombra without any player action whatsoever, This can happen if the player visits the Sombra supporters meeting, then never returns nor reports it.

Support the Club Method

The material support method will take about 260 days to complete, though this may vary greatly. After it is completed, a civil war will be triggered. The player will not receive the bonuses that are given by taking the extra time to charge crystals for Sombra's return. Once this is finished Equestria will be notified of suspicious activities, if they have increased presence in the Crystal Empire through their focus tree.

Join the Club Method

Tea Parties (21 days) - Accepting the invitation will allow the Tea Parties decision. This will start the club meeting. After visiting the club the player is offered a final opportunity to decline or to report to the authorities. Walking away and doing nothing this final time will cause the Sombra Threat to increase fascist support, which can eventually lead to Sombra's return at 50% fascism support.

The player will meet the various ponies in the group - Dust Snowfall, an old stallion with fond memories of Sombra; Sakira Bluebell, a young, true believer in the cause and group leader; Lake Frost, a talented caster, and Red Peyote a tough pony providing the security. All of these ponies will be recruitable under a Sombran government and will be affected by this adventure.

Getting to Work (35d) - The player will have the opportunity to hit the books for 35 days, and perform a raid on the Forbidden Section of the library. This will reveal the group's next action - getting their hands on umbrum crystals for the Dark Heart.

Charge the Crystals (Optional, 70d) - At this point the player will have the opportunity to further charge the crystals that will power Sombra's resurrection. This will improve Sombra's position in the civil war and the early bonuses given.

The Dark Heart (42d) - The player must find crystals for the Dark Heart. The player can visit the Umbrum Cage, an abandoned crystal mine, OR the Crystal Mountain caves near Snowbury.

  • Umbrum Cave - In the Umbrum cave, the player will be spooked by a group of foals. Successfully reassuring them will please Sakira. The group will have to break down a barrier to retrieve the crystals, which will injure Lake Frost.
  • Crystal Mountains - there is a problem - it will require a dive into icy waters. Whoever dives will get quite sick afterwards - the player, Sakira, Dust, or the player + Sakira. These choices affect the player's friendship with Sakira.

The Dark Heart Grows (70d) - The Dark Heart will begin to grow. Once this is finished Equestria will be notified of suspicious activities, if they have increased presence in the Crystal Empire.

Starting the Revolution

The Final Act (42d) - Both the Support the Club and Join the Club methods will now unlock the Final Act decision. The player can choose the final summoning incantation

  • Spiritis - The Empire will receive 5 divisions of 4k Infantry, They will also receive 25k ponypower (crystal uncharged) or 55k ponypower (crystal charged). They will get +15% buff to attack, defense and max planning for 128 days (crystal uncharged) or 188 days (crystal charged).
  • Vis - The Empire will receive 20% War Support, 20% Attack, 20% Defense, and -10% Training Time for 180 days (crystal uncharged) or 300 days (crystal charged)
  • Imperium - The Empire will receive 5% Defense, +30% PP, +20% Resource Efficiency, Recruitable Population 4% for 180 days (crystal uncharged) or 250 days (crystal charged)

If the player has made the right choices, some time after Sombra’s return Sakira will invite him to a restaurant and propose to him. A wedding event will happen afterwards, which is a happy ending for the event chain. However, if the player made the wrong choices, then Sakira will tell the player’s character that they are just friends, nothing more.

Spoiler end.

The civil war will generally be in the player's favor, though this will vary depending on luck. Equestrian troops will deploy throughout Crystal Empire lands, however they are not actually participating in the war. The player should advance ASAP and ignore Equestrian troops.

Starting Situation and Strategy

Sombra's first priority is to win the civil war to be ready for Equestria. Once Equestria reaches 15% War Support, it will receive a 70 day decision to take on Sombra. This decision will either provide a puppet wargoal, or powerful defensive and war support bonuses. For this reason, Sombra civil war should be performed as soon as possible - realistically, Sombra cannot defeat Equestria if is already at 15% war support.

Sombra's best strategy is to find support in neighboring powers as soon as possible against Equestria. The available options - the Lunar Empire, Chrysalis, and Stalliongrad (under Sinister Serov) are discussed further under National Focus.

National Focus

Sombran Crystal Empire Focus Tree
Hail mighty King Sombra! Your focus tree is short, but powerful, giving you an extremely rapid ramp-up from your small revolution. Other countries may have 10-year trees full of long term reforms that lead to an eventual growth as a power. BAH! The major powers could have conquered half of the world in that time, rendering it moot, and so shall you!

Your first priority after regaining your rightful rulership over the Crystal Empire is to deal with your arch-nemesis, Equestria, who have banished you from your rule before. You must also deal with the other upstart empires on the continent - or perhaps a shrewd king could understand that an enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Restore the Glory gives the Crystal Empire cores over many states in northern Equestria, most of Stalliongrad and one state in Olenia.

If the King decides not to simply crush every other nation on the continent, he'll see that very few nations want to ally with Equestria. Thus, due to their shared goals, Changeling Lands are a natural ally for Sombra, given their shared goal of Equestrian subjugation. However, Nightmare Moon and Stalliongrad under the opportunistic Sinister Serov are also valid options.

With an alliance formalized with one of the nations on the continent, King Sombra can introduce his Grey Pact to strengthen the cooperation. Fiendship gives the Crystal Empire cores across the entire Equestria and parts of Yakyakistan, also renaming the country to Imperium Crystale.

Finally, every King needs a Queen and Sombra can pick between strengthening his alliance with the Changelings or the Lunar Empire; or he can marry his childhood friend, Radiant Hope, who has given everything to help restore Sombra to the throne.

From Feudalism into the New Age brings about an extremely rapid industrial expansion, with the first focus taking only 42 days. Continuing down this path will reward factories, infrastructure, companies, and research slot with The Institute, whilst continuing further will enhance Sombra's dark magic, giving bonuses to magical research and massive boosts to recruitable population via mind control. With these focuses recruitment is unlikely to be a problem for Sombra. Notably also the Dark Crystals will provide a one year bonus, including a reduction in supply consumption and halving of all heat/winter attritions. Given the Dark Crystals path is not necessary to proceed, a prudent player may wish for the right time to use this focus, especially for fighting in the mountainous, wintery terrain of central /northern/western Equestria, and against the large heat attrition of Daybreaker's Solar Empire

Devoted Army, like the Feudalism into the New Age focus, kickstarts Sombra's society, with a 35 day completion time and generous bonuses to army performance, war support and output for the next year, along with two free land doctrines. Following this path further will grant lots of military factories and military techs.

Crystal Strength - This path leads to a traditional industrial segment, with civilian factories, research and a valuable research slot.

Military Expansion - A standard military path, though lacking in focus research (found elsewhere).

Alternate Path - Solar Puppet

When the Flag of Solar Empire Solar Empire forms, the Crystal Empire may remain with it, breakaway, or join the enemy (in a civil war). The chance of remaining is higher as an AI if Equestria has completed Crystal Empire focuses, or Crystal Empire has taken the subordination path. If the Crystal Empire remains it will become a puppet, but otherwise not change - it will stay Harmonic and will not be changed.

Spoilers below, we recommend these are best experienced in game before reading
Crystal Provinces Focus Trees

If the Crystal Empire does not join the Solar Empire, the Solar Empire may request puppeting after the civil war, or simply declare war to puppet. If this happens the Crystal Empire can be puppeted as Crystal Provinces which will grant a new Focus tree. It will also make the Inquisitor Sunrise Sparkle the new leader. Only being puppeted via war, releasing, or joining after having failed to support Solar Empire in the civil war will grant the focus tree.

This tree will strip most bonuses from the Mi Amore / Communist / Sombra trees, notably Blue Crystals (Free Repair) and the Crystal Heart (PP). However, it will maintain bonuses to Equestrian Integration, if the Crystal Empire took the Submission focus.

In general, the tree is quite powerful, and a Solar Empire player may gain a lot of benefits by keeping the puppet, especially due to the generous tech sharing bonuses.

Both paths share many bonuses, but tend to be larger on one side or the other.

  • The Show them The Light Tree (peaceful option) will give superior bonuses to stability, reinforce rate (+10%), Max Planning (15%), and Production Efficiency cap (10%). It will only be available under if the Solar Empire did not go God-Empress.
  • The Burn the Sinners option will reduce population, but will give superior bonuses to recruitable population factor, division attack, research rate, war support, heat attrition, tech sharing bonus (75%), and PP gain. This will also enable kamikaze-style attacks (Banzai Charge and aircraft Kamikaze). It will also spawn magical units via the Inquisitorial Military Focus. It will only be available if the Solar Empire has chosen the God-Empress path.

At the end of the tree, the Model Province focus will give Equestria the choice to annex the Crystal Provinces, or allow it to remain a puppet. This is a 50/50 chance.

Spoiler end.

Alternate Path - Lunar Puppet

When the Lunar Civil War starts, Crystal Empire may join the faction of Flag of Lunar Empire Lunar Empire and fight Equestria on its side, stay neutral, or stay with Equestria. The chance of joining Luna is higher if Equestria has not completed Crystal Empire focuses, and Crystal Empire has not taken the subordination path. Later, Lunar Empire can tell the Crystal Empire to become its puppet and if the Crystal Empire agrees - it becomes a puppet, but if it refuses - it will stay Harmonic and will not be changed.

Spoilers below, we recommend these are best experienced in game before reading
Moon Crystal Governorate Focus Trees

After a civil war, the Lunar Empire may request puppeting, and declare war to Crystal Empire if it refuses. But if it agrees - the Crystal Empire will be puppeted as the Moon Crystal Governorate which will grant a new Focus tree. Only being puppeted via war, releasing, or joining after having failed to support Lunar Empire in the civil war will grant the focus tree.

This tree will strip most bonuses from the Mi Amore / Communist / Sombra trees, notably Blue Crystals (Free Repair) and the Crystal Heart (PP).

In general, the tree is quite powerful, and a Lunar Empire player may gain a lot of benefits by keeping the puppet, especially due to the generous tech sharing, resourses, and construction bonuses.

Both paths share many bonuses, but tend to be larger on one side or the other.

  • The A Rare Priviledge (peaceful option) will give superior bonuses to stability and popularity of Supremancy, and Production Efficiency cap (10%). It will also spawn pegasus units via the Mixed Thestral-Pony Regiments focus. It will only be available if the Lunar Empire sent Rarity to govern the Empire.
  • The Nightfall option will reduce stability, exchange some generals, and mostly focused on improving relations with overlord, but will give lots of PP, superior bonuses to recruitable population factor, production cost of some equipment and war support. Also makes it possible to get the Modern Society Development level. This path will always be available.

At the end of the tree, the The Night's Embrace focus will give Lunar Empire the choice to annex the Crystal Governorate, or allow it to remain a puppet. It will mostly let the Governorate be its puppet, with higher change if CRY is led by a player.

Spoiler end.

Biography: Princess Cadance's humble origins belie her future as one of the royal alicorns of Equestria. The pegasus foal, who would later become known as Princess Mi Amore Cadenza, was found in a forest close to Vanhoover by her earth pony adopted parents. Taken to a nearby village, it was a peaceful, calm life until one day, a jealous sorceress named Prismia stole the love of the villagers using a malevolent magical necklace. The young Cadance confronted Prismia and turned her own magic against her, causing her to change her horrible ways. Afterward, Princess Celestia recognised her power, adopted her as her niece and elevated Cadance as the alicorn Princess of Love.

Thereafter, Cadance became a foalsitter for Princess Celestia's newest personal student, Twilight Sparkle. She would meet and fall in love with Twilight's older brother, Shining Armour. Their wedding day was going to be perfect, but unfortunately, the scheming Chrysalis, Queen of the Changelings used the opportunity to impersonate Cadance and seize control of Equestria by guile. Despite the presence of a large changeling host and their empowered Queen, Princess Cadance and Shining Armour used the power of their love to cast the changelings out of the country.

When the Crystal Empire reappeared, Celestia sent Cadance to rule over it, knowing her to be a descendant of Princess Amore, its last ruler before Sombra's reign. Cadance made her stand there, defeating the nascent shadow of King Sombra that lingered after his banishment by using a mythical artefact called the Crystal Heart. With their success, she and Shining Armour have safekept the land ever since, siring a foal named Flurry Heart along the way.

Biography: Sombra's origins are as mysterious as the mere mention of his name is unsettling. What is known, however, comes from the testimony of crystal ponies who were willing enough to speak. He is one of the umbrum — shadow ponies rumoured to be buried under the frozen wastelands of the Crystal Empire, waiting to be released. Some say it was loneliness and dejection that turned him bitter and jaded, striking out against Princess Amore, while others say that it was his only friend and companion, Radiant Hope, who turned Sombra to darkness.

What followed is known to everypony: the tyrannical King Sombra used dark magic of the umbrum to enslave the crystal ponies, using many for his personal experiments. His reign of terror only came to an end once the Princesses of Equestria banished him beneath the ice, only for Sombra to curse his land to disappear along with him. After a thousand years, his shadowy form made an attempt to take over again, only to be thwarted by the combined efforts of Princess Cadance and the bearers of the Elements of Harmony.

It is uncertain whether the most recent reincarnation of King Sombra is the same pony from the myths, but one thing is sure: The King is back.

The latest ascendant to Alicornhood, Princess Twilight Sparkle is the Element of Magic, former protégé of Princess Celestia and saviour of Equestria. Her meteoric rise to fame and success is attributed to her resolve in spreading the magic of friendship wherever she went, and in the process corrected many wrongs and even converted some former antagonists to the Equestrian cause. She is also one of the most brilliant mages of the time, having invented and perfected many spells and arcane methods. Yet Twilight Sparkle remains as humble as the day she first set hoof in Ponyville, preferring the company of her friends and family rather than dealing with the minutiae of bureaucracy. Recent events, however, have left her greatly saddened, and she has accepted the rulership of the Crystal Empire to honour her brother's memory. And even though there are many who dislike the Monarchy as a ruling system, very few ponies can say anything negative about Twilight Sparkle, who is the living embodiment of how much you can achieve with friendship and kindness.

The element of Generosity and heroine of Equestria, Rarity was thrilled to accept Luna's offer to become part of her campaign for promoting thestral rights. Business at the Manehattan Boutique had grown slow, and she was excited to see the glamour of Canterlot once again. What she didn't expect, however, is to become a part of the nation's collapse into civil war and the return of Nightmare Moon.

But Rarity understands that Nightmare Moon is still Luna. That she is still her friend, who saw no other choice after all her attempts to give batponies their place under the Moon. And thus Rarity made her difficult choice to support the Lunarist takeover. Ponies whisper in the dark, saying that she has been forcefully recruited, a mere slave of the Nightmare. Anypony who has interacted with Rarity, however, can tell that she has not changed at all. Her inspiration and passion for creating exquisite clothing has not waned at all, and she regularly contributes to the newly made charity organisations. She was surprised to be offered the place as the leader of a subservient Crystal Empire, but Rarity does her job gladly and with great flair!

One of the pegasi in the ranks of the lunarists, Misty Night is among the Empress' most devout followers. Having little to no formal training beyond her passion for Nightmare Moon, she has performed various crucial tasks during the War of the Two Sisters, enabling their final victory with her contributions to the cause. While not serving on the field, she has been spreading the word of the Lunar Cult, driving many ponies to abandon their worship of the scorned sun. Dark and brooding, Misty Night shares very little of her past and does not seem to have much in the way of personal relationships of even close confidants. In her mind, there is only the Moon and her service, which is why she has accepted the Empress' task to rule over the former Crystal Empire in the north.

After the Empire's return Dusty, like all Crystal ponies, had very few memories of her past except the horrors that she experienced under Sombra's rule. Once he was defeated and she realized how prosperous the Empire could be under the guidance of the Alicorns it didn't take long before she became paranoid of outside forces taking all of it away. She quickly enlisted in the Royal Guard and rose to the rank of general within a short span of time. She noticed the growing threat of the Changelings along the borders and began adapting her strategies to best combat them. One day Dusty fears that all that has been gained will be lost and she might even be open to more radical ideas that ensure the security of the Empire against other hostile species.

Wondermane's origins are nested in an obscure village on the edges of southeastern Equestrian jungles. She has shown proficiency in the field of magic from an early age. Although timid and introverted by nature, her fellow ponies encouraged her talent, resulting in Wondermane having a chance to attend a prestigious school in Baltimare. While her academic performance was not always stellar, Wondermane's natural drive and determination lead her to discover her exceptional talent in combat magic. Soon afterwards, she was recommended to the newly formed Equestrian unicorn corps. Even with her pacifist tendencies, Wondermane has shown herself to be capable in the field. Eventually rising to the top of her command, she was one of the first military personnel to be assigned to the recently returned Crystal Empire. The frigid north suits Wondermane more than her native jungles ever had.
