“ | A century ago, the Silence was decreed to save Kiria from the chaos and strife of modern civilisation. Today, the Silence has been lifted, and the Realm emerges from its self-imposed isolation into a world even more dangerous and unstable, fraught with hostile ideologies, predatory empires, and war. To realise her dream of an open and prosperous Kiria, idealistic Premier Autumn Blaze must use all her skill and wits to lead her kirin out of the dark past and through the turbulent present. The Realm must stand united against the centrifugal forces unleashed by the unbridled dash for national modernisation. Fail, and the ensuing Cacophony will make the kirin yearn for the quiet of a new Silence.

Lore
The Realm of Kiria, born from the squabbling mess of kirin villages and tribes that dotted the land for centuries, was only birthed roughly around the year 450 ALB, becoming the first unified nation-state in the species' history. Until that point, the kirin lived in a state of constant conflict, with the political landscape of the region consisting of an ever-shifting set of alliances that formed and fractured along with the temperaments of their leaders. For the kirin species bears a powerful and dangerous curse within them: the ability to transform into a beast of fire and fury, a nirik, upon becoming enraged, losing all sense of friend and foe, shedding their inhibitions and better judgement. When disagreements could leave entire villages burnt to cinders, unification of this aggressive species seemed impossible.
But where conquest, cunning, and cooperation had failed, The Way of Fire proved successful. The Way was a set of religious beliefs that taught its followers to practice controlling their emotions and reject the nirik state so that it would be possible for kirin to live in peace and harmony with each other. Those that followed the Way pointed to the teachings and responsibilities given to all kirin by their mythological deity, Concord, who had entrusted the kirin species with the last spark of the primordial fire that birthed the world. Succumbing to the destruction of the nirik state was a rejection and corruption of Concord's gift, and kirin could only be worthy of Her gifts if they ceased their fighting and worked together. To the kirin, long weary of the destruction and fighting their violent natures enforced on them, The Way of Fire offered an escape to a better life. Over the years, the majority of the kirin in the Realm unified under the leadership of the Vermilion Priests, establishing a peaceful society for the first time in their history to work together and better their lot in life.
Over time, the priests that ruled this society slowly morphed into the Vermilion Dynasty, led by an infallible Matriarch Superior. The stability offered by the Dynasty and the Way enabled the Kirin nation to expand in power and influence, allowing it to dominate much of south-eastern Zebrica. But even the Dynasty's power was not enough to prepare Kiria for the modern age. As the transition from feudalism to capitalism was well underway, precipitated by a proliferating merchant class, ninth-century Kiria experienced significant technological progress alongside the transformation of socioeconomic and political norms. The cities of Rhapsody, Fragrance, and Verdant became the loci for the forces of modernisation sweeping across the Kirin homeland. With a population boom induced by advancements in agriculture, the growth of these cities created conditions ideal for the ascent of the Kirin bourgeoisie, composed of merchants, landlords, and scholar-intellectuals, whose growing participation and influence in civil society undermined the control of the Dynasty and the Way of Fire over the Kirin Realm.
With the stratification of society along class lines came an increase in conflict. As they attempted to extend their control over Kiria’s economy and agriculture, the interests of Kirin merchants and landlords came into opposition with those of the peasants and city-dwelling labourers. Discontent built up among the lower classes, and before too long, violent and destructive peasant uprisings engulfed the land, exacerbated by the violent transformations of thousands of disgruntled peasants into nirik that ravaged large parts of the countryside and set flame to the Realm's urban centers. In an act of desperation, Matriarch Superior Noctilucent Charm instituted a series of harsh political measures and decrees that would collectively come to be known as The Silence. The Matriarch decreed that it was treason to assume a position of power over another kirin, as it undermined the absolutism of her divine rule. All forms of currency were thereby declared blasphemous, as were property rights. All forms of hierarchical organisation and relationships were also outlawed. The only exception was families — and the Way of Fire's Hierocracy, albeit reduced to a rump of its most zealous and ultraorthodox, and therefore trustworthy, acolytes. The majority of city-dwelling kirin were ordered to return to the countryside and engage in subsistence farming, depopulating the cities. Those who defied The Silence were ostracized and shunned, for the worship and veneration of the Vermilion Dynasty was so prolific and deeply entrenched within Kirin society that much of the populace at the time had become firmly devoted to their Matriarch; during that period of conflict and strife, as Kiria teetered on the brink of civil war, the Matriarch Superior had become a bastion of serenity and calm in the midst of the tempest. The remnants of the Kirin bourgeoisie fled, either overseas, or to the most distant reaches of the Realm, away from Imperial authority — now more or less defunct, because there was no longer a state through which the Matriarch Superior could exercise her power. The Realm of Kiria had, effectively, been put in a dark corner to slowly die.
Noctilucent Charm died in 971, at which point her only daughter, Princess Rain Shine, ascended as Matriarch Superior in a markedly modest affair. Rain Shine was determined to live up to her mother's legacy, and set about upholding the decrees of the Silence, dedicating most of her time to intensive study of the scriptures of the Way of Fire.
The Silence would last for roughly a century before an Equestrian diplomatic mission would venture into the isolated nation with the hopes of gaining an audience with Rain Shine. Working with a few dissident kirin, the mission was ultimately successful in helping Rain Shine realize her mother's errors, and began the first steps in opening up the country. As a new era dawns on Kiria, it is up to the Matriarch to undo the damage The Silence has caused to her Realm and bring her nation into the brave new world it finds itself in, before the influence of her dynasty fades forever.

Matriarch Superior of Kiria
|
Born: 2 April 945 in Vermilion
Biography: Matriarch Superior Rain Shine has lived her entire life upholding the imperial decrees that instituted the societal and cultural stagnation and decay of the Realm of Kiria, and never once did she imagine that she would be the kirin to undo them. The decrees had been issued by her mother, Matriarch Superior Noctilucent Charm, in 902, and when she passed in 971, Rain Shine swore upon her ascension pyre that she would maintain her mother's policies and devote her life to studying the Way of Fire and the teachings of the fire goddess, Concord, to protect Kiria. However, in 1006, an unexpected diplomatic mission from Equestria ventured into the isolated nation and reached Rain Shine's court in Vermilion. There, two bearers of the Elements of Harmony, Fluttershy and Applejack, argued that they had seen kirin living in poverty and squalor all throughout the realm as a result of The Silence, and while it was effective in preventing nirik transformations, it needed to end for the good of all kirinkind. They offered Equestrian aid in getting the nation back on its hooves, and Rain Shine, isolated from her subjects in the royal palace and oblivious to their plights, realized that continuing The Silence would only spell doom for her subjects in the long run. Though she had sworn to uphold her mother's policies, once Rain Shine learned of the terrible cost The Silence had on the people of Kiria, she agreed to repeal her mother's decrees and end it once and for all. Now, with The Silence ending in Kiria, Rain Shine has pledged to make up for her mother's mistakes and bring the kirin species into the modern age. But after 60 years of seclusion in Vermilion, Rain Shine may find that her authority is nowhere near as strong as her mother's was a century ago. Portrait by: Twotail813 |

Born: 13 July 969 in Chrysanthemum
Biography:: Not much is known about the mare who calls herself Rising Sun, and what is known paints only a vague picture at best. By her own admission, Rising Sun was born in Chrysanthemum and studied to become a priestess in the Way of Fire, as such a lifestyle was the only way to escape the utter stagnation of The Silence while it still held Kiria in its stranglehold. But even as a priestess of The Way of Fire, the mare was often regarded by her peers as too smart for her own good and twice as cunning as the most mischievous fox. She would regularly debate her senior priests about the merits and drawbacks of strictly adhering to the Matriarch Superior's decrees when all they brought about was suffering and ruin for the people of Kiria, and was regularly chastised for it. For the mare who was too smart by half for the lifestyle she had chosen, Rising Sun had reached a frustrating theological dead end to the problems surrounding Kiria. Realizing that she would never advance as a priestess in The Way of Fire, Rising Sun sailed down the Mellifluve where she ultimately ended up in Verdant at the age of 20. Once there, she quickly realized that Verdant was prospering where Chrysanthemum languished. The Silence was still in full swing over the city, but the many island communities of Verdant had formed their own cooperative communes that worked together to the benefit of all without breaking any of the Matriarch's decrees. Additionally, there was no rigid religious structure that dominate the everyday lives of the kirin in the city, only an individual communion between the average kirin and Concord, with spiritual leaders to aid their followers along toward their own revelations. Rising Sun quickly immersed herself in these beliefs, and in no time at all, had risen to the top of this new sect of The Way of Fire. Naming her sect the Rising Fire, Rising Sun would return to Chrysanthemum to spread her new teachings to the kirin of the west, and made many visits to towns and workshops around Kiria before ultimately ending up in Vermilion as the Grand Gallop Onward progressed to bring her teachings to a new level of national awareness. Now, Rising Sun finds herself on top of the Realm's food chain, in a position of almost unlimited authority and power. The Rising Fire has risen with her as well, and her beliefs are ready to be shared across the Realm. The Rising Fire is grappling with The Way of Fire, and Rising Sun will be the one to bring about a new era of theology and change to Kiria, one it never could have imagined before. Born: 11 October 953 in Skyfall
Biography:: Despite his rise to power in Kiria, Fickle Current was not born a son of the Realm. Rather, he was foaled in Skyfall, where his family had fled the crushing economic collapse that struck hold of Kiria as The Silence was imposed at the beginning of the 10th century. It was there in Skyfall that the Sycee Trading House, one of the Realm's strongest trading conglomerates before The Silence, had relocated, and Current's family enjoyed close ties to the Trading House that left them extremely wealthy. With the wealth that his family possessed, Current was able to afford a prestigious education in Yale, where he was personally tutored by Cypress Snow, another member of the Kirin diaspora and its foremost literati. Under Snow's guidance, Current learned to sharpen his business acumen and cunning insight that would serve him well as a successful businesskirin and, later, the natural fit for leader of the NAKP during the Grand Gallop Onward in Kiria. It was only late in 1006 when Fickle Current stepped hoof in Fragrance, the city of his ancestors, for the first time as The Silence began to lift across the Realm. Remembering the tales of how ineptitude and superstition in Vermilion once forced his family into exile and nearly impoverished them, Current soon resolved to be a champion for the kirin who lost everything in Fragrance and do everything he could to truly modernize Kiria according to what he and the rest of the Kirin diaspora knew in Skyfall and throughout western Griffonia. Unfettered capitalism would be the order of the day, for the wheels of progress in such a backwards land could only be turned with the grease of tremendous investment into the Realm. If Kiria ever wanted to truly join the modern world as a functional nation, it would take an almost unimaginable level of investment, and so Current has resolved to do everything he can to make the nation an enticing opportunity for the wealthy. Traditionalist Mystic
|
Born: 29 December 966 in Agate
Biography:: Born in the mountainous monastery-town of Agate, Winter Frost was surrounded with the religious and mystic fervor of The Way of Fire from the moment of her birth. As she grew older, the young kirin quickly found herself deeply infatuated with the love and divine guidance the Kirin fire goddess, Concord, had blessed her people with, and as such, Winter devoted her entire life to understanding Concord's teachings and sharing them with the rest of the kirin species. Regularly spending many dark winter mornings in mediation along the highest peaks of the holy mountain range that surrounded Vermilion, Winter Frost's devotion was soon rewarded when she was chosen to go to Vermilion and further her service to Concord by serving Matriarch Superior Rain Shine herself. As such, Winter became one of the few kirin who had personally met and interacted with the reclusive Matriarch before The Silence ended, and she became personally devoted and loyal to the Matriarch alongside her fierce devotion to The Way of Fire. Such devotion led to her becoming personally favored by the Kirin Matriarch, and by the time The Silence was officially repealed, Winter Frost was the most influential priestess in Vermilion. As The Silence gave way to a new era of politics in Vermilion, Winter Frost became the loudest critic of reckless modernisation and provided a solid rock to anchor the concerns of the kirin religion to, regularly pushing against motions, bills, and decrees that she believed threatened the sanctity of Concord's divine teachings. When Kiria collapsed into civil war as a result of her protests being ignored, the priestess soon replaced the inept and naive Imperial Premier Autumn Blaze as Rain Shine's most important advisor. Now, Winter Frost works to bring Kiria back to its roots of firm faith and unyielding devotion to Concord and The Way of Fire, and find the answers to Kiria's modernization problem in Concord's teachings. The shipyards of Fragrance were among the most modern in the 700s and 800s, churning out top-of-the-line oceangoing junks and other vessels for private owners and the Vermilion government alike. Upon the conclusion of the Silence, Fragrance saw its chance. The diaspora flooded into the city of their ancestors, and many returnee shipwrights pooled together their knowledge and capital to rebuild Fragrance's ruined shipyards and render them operational. Combining domestic craftsmareship and foreign innovation, the shipyards of Fragrance function once more. While Vermilion generously subsidizes the Fragrance shipyards, the Matriarchate has never formally apologized for the devastation of Fragrance. |

The Dreamboat name is on the lips of every trader, captain, freight forwarder, and harbourmaster in all the ports of Zebrica, Griffonia, and Equus. Shipments from Dreamboat do not arrive very often, but when they do, everycreature hears about it. Many clients contract Dreamboat for shipments that need to sail through the South Kirin Sea, to ensure that their cargo is protected from pirates by the best sailors money can buy. Dreamboat's rivalry with Scarlet Sails Shipping is the shipping industry's worst-kept secret; indeed, stories of thrilling skirmishes at sea between Dreamboat mariners and the pirate scoundrels of Auburn Isle have become the stuff of maritime legend, and do much to burnish Dreamboat's brand image. Allegations of collusion with Scarlet Sails Shipping, their seemingly pirate-immune navy, and their dubious ties with Pirate Queen Roaring Fire are wholly unfounded. |

The Rhapsody Arsenal proudly bears its illustrious and storied reputation. The "Ever-Industrious Smithy" of the Procurate of Rhapsody has long supplied the Kirian Banners with cannon and arquebuses, shot and shell, to defend and enforce the will of Concord across the Realm and beyond. As the Silence descended over Kiria, so too did the Arsenal's fortunes suffer. Officially, the Arsenal never ceased operation, having received a special writ from Matriarch Superior Noctilucent Charm to remain in operation throughout the Silence. The Arsenal had always been the premier military supplier of the Procurate and the Realm, and therefore they had some prestige in the eyes of Concord. In reality, the Arsenal's forges had cooled many years before the Silence for lack of funding, resources, and expertise. As the Silence came to an end and Matriarch Superior Rain Shine decreed modernization and openness to be the order of the day, the Procurate decided it would be wise to try and resurrect the Arsenal once again. And so the Rhapsody Arsenal was reborn, recruiting to its workshops and laboratories both domestic talent and foreign know-how to gird the defenders of Concord once again. |

If certain accounts are true, the Aureolin Monastery, which is currently situated deep in Kiria's western reaches, was received, not built, by its founder Aureolin pre-written history. She had pondered deeply upon Concord's paradox that is the kirin and her nirik state, but upon reaching the height of revelation, she had burst into flames without descending into feral wrath. For this blessing upon kirinity, Concord gave her a towering temple—the world's first monastery—as both a gift and a responsibility to all future generations. Thus the legendary lineage of nirik warrior-monk Valiants—and to a painstaking extent, the more recent Vanguards—was born, continuing to this day as among the first places aspiring kirin monks travel to in search of inner truths as well as physical mastery through martial arts. Under the Children of Concord, the monastery has served as a major hub of propagating Trinitarianism, believing that the Valiant is not a balance between two kirin-nirik entities but is itself a third entity. |

From the forests of the west to the mountains of the heartlands then the many rivers of the east, the average kirin soldier would face many obstacles hindering their journeys. Recognising the need to alleviate this problem before a major war would cripple them beforehoof, Premier Autumn Blaze established the Motor Bureau. The bureau itself is a potpourri of researchers studying automobiles for military applications, investors willing to shell out the money to see dozens of kirin-made prototypes adjusted amid a hundred trials, and Equestrian advisors bonding with the above two in the field of civil service. While this brainchild of the Premier shouldn't work on paper, the principles of harmony ensure that this rather decentralised organisation produces results under gladsome working conditions. |

Founded sometime during the 8th Century, the All-Kiria Artificers' Guild has long been the vanguard of scientific and technological innovation in Kiria and Eastern Zebrica; the Guild's prolific experimentation with steam and clockwork mechanics in last decade of the 9th Century were the dominant driving force behind the rapid modernisation of contemporary Kiria. The Guild had fiercely resisted the Silence, withdrawing to their strongholds at Massicot and Fragrance and seceding from the Realm. The devastation of Fragrance in the aftermath of a punitive expedition by the last remnants of organised Imperial forces led to the exodus of the surviving members to Griffonia, where the Guild would endure a century in bitter exile. The post-Silence generation of the Guild's leadership-in-exile kept abreast of the latest technological developments in Griffonia, with some even having taken up teaching positions at the prestigious universities of Yale. |

The infamous Sorghum Foundry exemplifies a core trend in Kirian history, that being the constant tension between modernisation and the pressures thereof. Founded before the Silence by an enterprising Bannerkirin who foresaw the inevitability of modernization, the Foundry stoked its first furnaces in the city of Sorghum, importing raw iron from the Peaks of Peril and the mountain ranges of the north to process into steel. Just prior to the enactment of the Silence, Sorghum had begun to look like a truly modern city of the time, with new structures of brick and steel being erected in its industrial districts. As the provincial capital of the rural-agricultural Great Mellifluve Delta region, Sorghum occupies a perfect geographical position for labour-intensive industrial production, with its factories presenting a chance for famers from the rural periphery to earn relatively high wages as urban workers. |

This leader is a commander of a Kirin Banner. The Vermilion Dynasty's Banner System codifies a warrior caste centered around familial clans, all of which can trace their lineage back to ancestors who had served in the army of the first Kirin Matriarch, Incandescent Dawn. This leader would have trained from a young age in martial arts and leadership, so as to carry on their Banner's proud legacy of military service to the Kirin Realm. All Kirin Banners are headed by a Patriarch- or Matriarch-Commander who are the most distinguished member of their clan — usually capable warriors and leaders in their prime. Heaps of praise could be had upon the head of the Banner of the Scented Moonflower. Its Matriarch-Commander, Firethorn was raised in a Banner that had both evolved into a complex clan and retained enough soldiers to fight alongside its equals (at least before the Silence). In the Silence's last years, Firethorn had seen the folly of the Silence a century in the making. Her clan had propped themselves up thanks to their loyalty to the Realm, but outside the Banner's cosy home villages, the rest of Kiria had languished: just miles away, a small city had thrived; that seemed a lie when all she saw and walked through was a ghost town populated by farmers who lived hoof to mouth. |

- Lan Kir Militarchy - a notable threat, if The Grand Gallop Onward fails. After they conquer Zaikiria, in 1011 Lan Kir will attempt to invade whoever ended up winning the Kirian civil war. Not too dangerous on their own, if you are prepared. They will not dare attack Kiria that never had a civil war.
- Roaman Kaiserate - the most serious threat to Kiria in most playthroughs. If they aren't stopped early on, they will quickly grow in power after conquering and coring most of Southeastern Zebrica and may be granted a wargoal on Kiria as early as 1012. Best dealt with as early as possible while they're distracted fighting someone else. Conversely, while Talonsvaal Republiek shares most of their wargoals with Roam, they will not invade Kiria, but may prove to be an equally formidable opponent if Kiria wishes to attack them instead.
- Yarildom of Chital – a situational threat. As a non-generic nation, their expansion goals depend on who becomes their leader, and only some concern themselves with Kiria or Kiria's neighbours. You have nothing to worry about if they follow their historical path with Eva Pillai, among others.
- Countries of Southeastern Zebrica, Zaikiria, Hindia, and Taungpau - potential targets of expansion, depending on the path. None, except those mentioned above, will pose any challenge.
